A Kahoot alternative made for quiz nights

Kahoot is brilliant in a classroom. A night out asks for different things: teams round a table, a score that rewards knowing the answer, games between the rounds, Bingo, prizes, and a show the whole room watches.

What you get with JoltQuiz

Knowing beats tapping first

In a live Kahoot a right answer is worth up to 1,000 points, and the faster it comes the more it is worth. That suits a race in a classroom. At a quiz night it means the table that taps first beats the table that talked it through. Kahoot has an Accuracy mode that scores only being right.

JoltQuiz scores a point per right answer by default, whenever it lands before the timer. If you want speed to count, switch it on for the quiz or for one round: 5.0 for the fastest right answer down to 1.0, so being right always scores. Numbers questions can be closest-wins. JoltQuiz has four scoring modes in all.

Teams round a table

Kahoot's team mode comes with its paid plans, with a cap on how many teams can play in one game. On JoltQuiz, teams are on every plan. A team shares a four-letter code and everyone plays on their own phone. Choose whether the first answer from the table stands, or only the captain answers and can change it while the clock runs. Solo players and teams can play in the same quiz.

Made for a room, not a lesson

The big screen runs the night: round titles, the question, how many teams have answered, the answer spread when you reveal, and a leaderboard that builds up to the top three. Put a sponsor's message or a raffle on a slide of its own. Run it all from any device, and if that is your phone you can walk the room with the microphone.

Both products put a big screen in front of the room and take answers on phones with no account. What changes is everything around the questions.

Using Kahoot in a pub or at a paid event

Kahoot's own pricing page says that using Kahoot for customer-facing purposes needs its Kahoot! 360 Pro Ultra plan, and that you may not charge fees as part of using it unless Kahoot has authorised it. If you charge entry for a quiz night, read their terms first. JoltQuiz is made for pubs, clubs, venues and fundraisers.

When Kahoot is the better choice

For a classroom or staff training, Kahoot is hard to beat: it is made for learning, and its reports show who understood what. And for a single audience of thousands, Kahoot's biggest plans go past JoltQuiz's 1,000 players.
